Big Feature This Week At Mac’s Backs! (+ Room For Improvement?)

I’ve been talking about this in my Facebook posts for a while, but because I’m psyched, here’s one more shameless self-promotion: I’m being featured at this month’s session of Mac’s Backs’ poetry event series! Please be there this Wednesday,  August 12 at 7pm, not only to support me and the other featured readers, but also the venue, which has been a fixture in the Coventry community for years! For those not from the area, here’s the address:

1820 Coventry Road
Cleveland Heights, OH 44106
216.321.2665

My performance is going to include at least one new piece, and an optional open mic is included as well! I genuinely hope to see you there!

There is another topic I’d like to address in this post: It has come to my attention that despite my occasional reminders that I welcome feedback, I rarely receive any comments on this blog. This is an issue on which I’d like to work, and in contemplating it, I’ve formed the broader goal of improving the blog in general.

My questions for you are these:

  • What can I to encourage more interaction between my readers & myself?
    and
  • What other steps would you like to see me take to improve this blog?

Evergrow (+ Monthly Co-Feature at Mac’s Backs!)

Good morning! I was going to share a depressing new poem which I recently wrote & revised, but since I’ve had a number of good days lately myself, I changed my mind and composed a more hopeful verse to display in its place. I hope that this poem adds some hope and positivity to your quest for your deepest desire in life:

Evergrow

In other news, I have an invitation for my local readers which I hope you’ll be pleased to accept: I am one of this month’s featured poets at Mac’s Backs on Coventry! I’ll be sharing the stage with 2 other readers on Wednesday, August 12th at 7pm (Click HERE for full info!) As usual, there will be an open reading following the features, so please consider bringing a piece or two of your own! I’m very excited to be given this honor, and I would be thrilled to see a good turnout, so please jot this down in your calendars!

If you won’t be able to make it, or you just want even more poetry and entertainment in your life (I wouldn’t blame you!), keep in mind that you can often find me & numerous other talented individuals at various other Cleveland-area venues’ open mic events, including:

NEWS FLASH: Performance This Saturday

NEWS FLASH: I am scheduled as a featured poetry performer at this event on Saturday night (click here)! I’ll be reading several new pieces, as well as selections of my past work. Is there a past poem that you’d really like to hear? Let me know! I hope to see you there!

Upcoming Publication & Competition Performance

It’s that time of year again: the Hessler Street Fair is approaching quickly, and for the third consecutive year, one of my poems has been accepted for publication in the affiliated annual poetry anthology! As you may recall, this means that the accepted poem, “Appalachian Eruption,” is also eligible for this year’s performance competition on May 14th at 7:00 pm at Mac’s Backs on Coventry. I have no intention of letting this opportunity pass me by.

That brings me to a question: What can I do to make my performance of “Appalachian Eruption” stand out??

Past contest-winning poets whose performances I’ve had the good fortune of witnessing have displayed the ability to present their work in ways which caught and held the attention of judges & audiences alike. How can I best do this with “Appalachian Eruption”?

PLEASE HELP ME! LEAVE ME ADVICE & IDEAS IN THE COMMENTS BELOW!! THANK YOU!!!

Upcoming Performance!

Before I announce my upcoming performance, however, I’d like to share the results of last night’s event:

Last night, at Mac’s Backs on Coventry, I participated in the 2012 Hessler Street Fair Poetry Contest. I was not in the top 4 and thus did not win any of the prizes, but I did receive the 5th Place Honorable Mention!! Check back soon here at Kevin’s Journal for the video of last night’s performance as soon as it becomes available!

Now for the upcoming performance: I will be reading some of my poems at the NEOpoets booth at the Hessler Street Fair onMay 20th at 3:40 PM!! Please come listen to my performance, and consider purchasing a copy of the 2012 Hessler Street Fair Poetry Anthology which contains my work! It only costs a few bucks and it will be well worth your money! In any case, I hope that you can make it and that you enjoy my performance while you are there!

Finally, I will leave you with a few photos from last night, courtesy of Betsy Gates. Notice the awesome “Poe-Eh-Tree” shirt designed by Josh B. and Caroline P. of the Notre Dame College Poetry Club:

Announcement: I’ve Been Published!!!

You read correctly: My poem “Aftermath of the Tragedy” has been published in the 2012 Hessler Street Anthology! This is especially important to me because this publication will also include my poetic idol, Michael Salinger! I consider this a great honor!

If you’re not busy that night, please come hear me perform the published poem at Mac’s Backs Paperbacks on Coventry (If you’re from the Cleveland, Ohio area, you should know where this is) on Wednesday, May 9th at 7:00 PM. Michael Salinger and the other published poets will be reading as well, so don’t miss this treat!

If I happen to win a prize at the Mac’s Backs reading (yes, there are prizes!), then I will also be reading on May 20th at the Hessler Street Fair! Even if I don’t win, I still encourage you to attend the Hessler Street Fair and hear the winning poems performed. Support your local poets!

That’s is for now, but check back soon for more new poems!
